What is Addyi Used for?

This medication is used to treat HSDD, which is one of the four common types of female sexual dysfunction disorders. This medication is specifically designed to help women that are experiencing a general lack of sexual motivation, desire or response to sexual stimulation for an extended period, which is usually at least six months. According to HSDD studies, approximately 22% of women globally are experiencing continuous HSDD symptoms. Other independent studies project at least 40% of women will experience this common condition at some stage.

Although there is little evidence to suggest the specific root cause of this condition, experts do understand that HSDD is commonly the result of various mental and physical conditions. When a dose of Addyi is administered, the active ingredient works by rebalancing and increasing the activity of dopamine and norepinephrine while simultaneously lowering the activity of serotonin. The elevated activity of both dopamine and norepinephrine is shown to increase the response to sexual excitement during arousal and the lower serotonin levels to increase sex drive and improve response to sexual stimulation.

The effects of this medication are slow release and taken over a maximum period of up to 18 months. Although everyone responds to medications differently, using this medication as part of their schedule allows women to maintain effective levels of medication each day, allowing them to overcome the effects of HSDD safely and effectively.

How to Use Addyi

For safe administration, patients take one oral dose at night with a glass of water just before going to bed. Avoid taking this medication during the day, as doing so may lead to low blood pressure issues and other serious side effects.

To ensure safe consumption, swallow the whole tablet and avoid chewing, crushing or biting the tablet. Women can take Addyi with or without food to prevent stomach issues and nausea however, they should only consume a light meal or low-fat snack. The most efficient and effective way to use Addyi is on a scheduled treatment plan that ensures safe daily use and maintains a consistent amount of the medication in the system.

If symptoms persist or the treatment is ineffective, speak to a doctor about changing to another medication. Women new to using Addyi may want to take a reduced dosage first to see how they respond to the medication. If the reduced dosage is well tolerated, they can look to increasing the dosage as per instructions provided by their doctor or pharmacist.

How Long is Addyi Effective?

Each person responds differently to medications and the overall effectiveness will vary for each individual. The effects of Addyi typically accumulate and increase over a maximum period of 18 months and provide consistent relief when taken every day as directed. Addyi is the first of its kind, as previously mentioned, that can be taken once per day for 12 – 18 months, depending on the severity of the condition and the patients level of general health.

When women are using this medication, taking one each day will not only help to rebalance and maintain physical effects consistently, it also helps reduce stress and anxiety levels. To ensure the beneficial effects of this medication outweigh any compromise to health, women taking this medication should avoid the consumption of alcohol at least until the following day.
